9:09 Cold weather has come and the Hyundai tick has come at this car for the first time.

I knew about the problem. The blow by gas that is redirected (after 70s) into the intake manifold to reduce pollution contains drops of oil. It is directed there through the so called PCV valve and a rubber hose. But some fractions of the oil, the so call paraffins, solidify on the walls of the intake manifold. Especially in cold weather.

So they fix one problem by creating another one. Because sticking valve translates into a host of problems like misfires, vibration with poor driveability and loss of mpg.

When the engine heats up enough or the weather changes a bit  during colder seasons (like during this time, at noon or under Sun), some of the wax migrate on the valves and turns into varnish because of temperature and make them stick. Harder to open by the hydraulic lifters that get squished. Which makes the ticking sound.

For now, it disappears with RPM and engine temperature. At higher RPM, the oil pump pumps more oil and oil pressure is higher and the lifter can beat the stickiness.

That is the reason i built a catch can. But have not seen wax in it except when i used synthetic oil which is more waxy. But now i use an oil which i am not sure what it is. It says motor oil and that's all. The fact it does not say synthetic does not guarantee it is not. Or could have changed the formula since since i had this problem until this year after they unexpectedly changed the price from 17 dollars to 25 for a 5 gallons jug.

The thing is. With great sacrifices (they start shows outside every time i get at the car) i stuck a borescope camera through the throttle inside the manifold and took pictures and it all came drops of orange stuff. Not at the closest cylinder next to throttle where the flow of air is faster but more in the back, at cylinder 1 and two where i hear the tick.

But while writing here an idea came to me and i think more and more about doing it. I will try and put some thermal insulation stuff around the composite manifold which will retain some of the heat of the engine and help melt the wax. I hope it will not help melt the composite (plastic mainly) material of the manifold itself LOL. I hope the melted wax will not create more problems on the valves in the short run.

Another thing crossed my mind. Big oil money and car making money may be involved in all these shows i see all around me because changing things and technologies to mitigate with this problem would cost too much and combustion engine are being phased out and this is what brings all kinda hells onto me and probably causing other things. The war in Iran, just to displace the word oil from the minds of people hearing what i keep saying.

Ok if you don't believe me do what i do. Rough noisy start at your car during colder days? Stick a a USB borescope camera which now are cheap, under 20 dollars through your throttle and look. Or simply a wooden stick with drop of cotton and swab it (but be careful not to introduce something no matter how small in there cause you might ruing your engine).

Right.

Here are phone screenshots with pictures from inside the manifold. Cause last time when i tried to transfer them onto the card, the just disappeared from the app's folder. How i know it is wax? Some came on the semi-rigid tube i stuck the camera through (to protect the camera from the oil there). In the past i found actual wax in the catch can even during summer, when i was using most expensive synthetic oils.

3:40 PM Right on.

Right (on).
